CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Uchenna expected the Watcher to be skeptical when Professor Fauna told him about their secret society—since there appeared to be no mythical creatures around here—just those goat things with the incredible, unicorn-like horns. But the Watcher didn’t seem doubtful at all. Maybe because Jersey was perched on a boulder above their heads, the fur on his face blown back by the mountain breeze, his back and neck stretched. He looked like he was posing for a postcard.

As Professor Fauna spoke, the Watcher listened more and more intensely, clicking the string of black beads in his right hand.

When he finished explaining the Unicorn Rescue Society, Professor Fauna leaned back. “Now it’s your turn, Mr. Watcher. I want to know everything about those amazing double-horned creatures!”

“And what those beads do,” Elliot quickly added.

Waleed smiled. “The beads are for tasbih. They don’t do anything. We just use them to remember God throughout the day, between prayers.”

Without warning, the Watcher reached out and handed the beads to Elliot. Elliot hesitated at first, but then took them and examined them. A simple string held the glassy beads together, and a long tassel hung off the end. He clinked them a few times like the Watcher did, bunched them together in his palm, and handed them back.
